The
Band
aka Vegetarians of
Love, Happy Clubsters, BobKatz, Rent-O-Killers
|
An extraordinary day in
Irish social history - May 17th 1986. On that day, thirty
Irish bands stormed their way through a fourteen hour concert
in Dublin which gathered the biggest ever television audience in
Ireland.
The concert was called "Self-Aid"and it was the last
time that Bob Geldof played with the band known as The
Boomtown Rats. The same year, Bob went solo with his first
album "Deep In The Heart of Nowhere". Various high
profile muso's helped him get the project together. But Bob
needed to recruit a permanent band for his solo touring and
recording commitments. The next album was the critically
acclaimed "Vegetarians of Love", which was when most
of Bob's present band came on board. Anyone who has seen
Geldof live, will know they are a formidable team and make the
job of making music seems so easy. Geldof is lucky to have
such a tight bunch of musicians behind him.

Pete
Briquette
Musician,
Producer, Writer - Bass & Vocals
|
Pete
has had a career in the music industry spanning over 30 years
as a musician, songwriter, programmer, producer and now as a
score writer. Most recently he scored a feature film starring
Pete Postelthwaite entitled The Rat, having written, produced
and arranged this with his long time partner and friend Bob
Geldof. Pete also scored the music for a 90 minute drama for
the BBC called Judge John Deed and also produced the original
track with a new act Metisse (Wildstar) entitled Boom Boom Ba,
which Madonna selected for her movie with Rupert Everett, The
Next Best Thing. Over the past five years he has been heavily
involved with an eclectic batch of artists, adding his special
talents to records by such established artists as Bob Geldof,
Tricky, The Frames and a new album for Belgium artiste Arne
(Virgin, France) as well as working with some very talented
new artists including Bloem, Metisse, A and Nillson.
Pete's
career of course began with Bob as co-founder of the Boomtown
Rats, with whom he played bass and made six albums. During the 9
years in the band he not only wrote and produced numerous album
tracks, but two top five singles, Like Clockwork and Banana
Republic. In the early '90's he began a new direction as a
producer, and had huge success with French artist Renaud, who's
album sold well over a million copies. Later he teamed up with
Tricky and soon became his musical director as well as producing
most of the Nearly God album, which included contributions from
such artists as Damon Albara, Alison Moyet and Bjork.
Pete
produced Bob's last album, Sex, Age & Death and co-produced
the Happy Club album. He was also the co-producer with Bob
of all the re-mastered Boomtown Rats albums, which were recently
released and he oversaw the mixing and editing of the 2 Boomtown
Rats DVDs. More recently Pete was responsible for the music that
accompanied the Geldof In Africa TV series on the BBC. Pete has been a permanent feature of Bob
Geldof's musical life and his great friend since the beginning.

Bob
Loveday
Vocals, Violin,
Guitar, Mandolin, Whistles, Recorders, Style Guru
|
Multi-instrumentalist
Bob Loveday is best known for his exploits with the electric
violin, though he is also at ease with the viola, mandolin, bass
guitar, recorders / penny whistles and keyboards. (and even has
a recent reputation as a contrabass balalaika player!)
Born
in South Africa, he started playing piano at four, and at eight
(now in Zimbabwe) he started on the violin.
His family moved to England, where during his teens he
discovered to his horror that he was being groomed with the life
of a classical virtuoso. Soon
his Haydn developed signs of Hendrix, while his Saint-Saens
smacked of Santana.
Never
one to develop a career along conventional paths, Bob's very
first professional recording session was with Paul McCartney at
Abbey Road, since which heady start he has gone onto become
proficient in a wide arena of musical styles, contributing to
albums by Kirsty McColl, Paul Carrick and Louden Wainwright III
amongst others. For
a while he established a foothold in Austin, Texas where he
played the bar rooms and honky tonks, developing a feel for the
rootsy styles of the deep south.
This experience came in useful when he accompanied Garth
Brooks, Randy Travis, Joe Ely and others on UK television.
Bob
has also been spotted on TV with Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle, French
& Saunders and Rory McGrath's Death By County with Philip
Pope.
Although
essentially a freelance session player, he has worked closely
with a number of bands. Notably
a fascinating four years with The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, in
the late '80's touring with them all over the world and
featuring on two or maybe more of their albums.
He
first worked with Bob Geldof on the Vegetarians of Love album in
1990. Also featured
on the subsequent Happy Club album in 1993 and the new album
Sex, Age & Death. In
early 1994 with Bee Gee's second tour of Australia, Bob's,
(by now re-monikered within the group as Vince Lovepump) joined
the line-up on a regular basis.
In the last few years he has also recorded with Van
Morrison, Jeff Beck, Neneh Cherry, The Pet Shop Boys and Paul
Young.

Niall
Power
Drums, Percussion,
Vocals
|
Also
known as Mad Dog, Niall started playing drums professionally in
1975 with various Irish show bands.
In
1980 he joined Irish rock band Stepaside and later, in 1984 he
played with Les Enfants and moved to London to sign a record
deal with Crysalis. Niall
has played with other Irish and international acts, such as
Johnny Logan - Eurovision winner, Marianne Faithful, Zerra
One, and Hazel O'Connor, as a session drummer.
During his time playing with Hazel O'Connor, they
supported Bob Geldof and The Vegetarians of Love on the Veggies
dates in Ireland. Pete
Briquette asked Niall if he would like to audition for the band,
because the current drummer was leaving in three weeks time.
Pete told Niall he would send him a tape, but it never
arrived. Niall went
into the rehearsal studio, never having heard the material,
played two songs and got the gig.
He admits to being amazed because at the time he thought
he was just standing in until the other drummer came back, which
he never did, that was 10 years ago.
During his time with Bob and the band he has continues to
work with other acts as a session player, most notably the 2001
Westlife Coast to Coast World Tour.

Dunn
Keyboards,
Accordion, Vocals
|
Before
joining Bob's band I worked with Loudon Wainright III, before
that with Richard Thompson. I was told later I was 3rd or 4th
choice for accordionist, they'd begun by looking for a female!
Perhaps it was a wind up. I'm indebted to Bob Loveday for
putting my name forward, I think we'd met on a Loudon session.
When Steve Fletcher (keyboards) went back to the Penguin Cafe
Orchestra I suggested to Pete and Bob that thanks to MIDI
(technology that means I can operate synthesizers etc from the
squeezebox) I could take care of the vertical as well the
horizontal keyboards for the band. They liked the idea. Other
work of mine includes David Thomas (of Pere Ubu), the Lightning
Seeds, Rolf Harris, the Electric Bluebirds, the Realists, Juice
on the Loose, the John Tams Band, the Mysteries @ the National
Theatre, Vladimir Asriev, Tziganarama, the Klezmer Festival Band
(Gregori Shektor). When I'm at home I play piano Sunday mornings
at the Shaftesbury Christian Centre, Deptford.

Turnbull
Lead Guitar,
Vocals
|
Holder
of the long service medal for bravery in the face of BLOCKHEADS
1977/ 2005. Although guitars are my passion I've recently
begun a love affair with a tiny Chinese ukulele,(Hawaiian word
meaning dancing flea) Enough Turnbull get on with it.
In 1968 I was considering going back to
Newcastle
to get a 'proper job' when I met Jimmy Hendrix at the
Speakeasy club, London. He watched my band and afterwards he told me he liked my
playing (probably because we did one of his songs STONEFREE).
Since then I've lived the life of Reilly travelling the world
playing and recording with some very talented people
INCLUDING, Chosen Few, Heavy Jelly, Skip Bifferty, Bell
n Arc, Paul Young, Alison Moyet, Eurythmics, Spiritual Cowboys.
London Beat, Lulu, Roger Daltrey. Mick Jones, Nick Lowe, Gillan
and Glover, Alchemical, Loving Awareness Band, Kristy Mc CALL,
Robbie Williams, Talk Talk, World Party Karl Wallinger, Bob
Geldof Steve Marriot/
Ronnie Lane Sam Moore, Wrecless Eric, Shirley Abicaire, Pearl
Harbour (The Tubes), Frankie Howard, Roy Budd and some very
RELAXED Boys from Liddypool. I was a
Blockhead with Ian Dury for many years and now sing his
songs for a laugh and I
write songs for the
blockheads. Yes we still tour and I'm doing..very well! Our
good friend Phil
Jupitus once said that my claim to Fame is singing on the film
soundtrack of Get Carter (the Michael Caine version)
Maybe Mick Gallagher and I got the session because we
come from Newcastle
where the film was shot.
I'm appearing in a movie
'Confetti' in September as the naked guitarist performing
with the cast 'One Love' by Ian Dury and The Blockheads.
I'm keen to make a solo Album as I have some good songs now. I
nearly got a deal in 1968/9 with Beatles label Apple but George
H. left my acetate demos on his car dash and they melted in the
sun. .God Bless him. So, wish me luck….
